Councils could be handed powers to set local business rate discounts to encourage economic growth under ministerial plans due to be published as The MJ went to press.
The move will allow town hall leaders and senior officials to focus local economic development on what they deem to be key local industries – providing young businesses, for example, with larger than normal discounts to encourage trade.
