Councils across England can hold official prayers again, communities secretary Eric Pickles announced on 6 April, despite a February High Court ruling that council prayers should not form part of official business.

Following approval in both Houses of Parliament, the power to hold formal council prayers has been extended from principal to town and parish councils under the Localism Act's ‘general power of competence'.
