Preparing for a new dawn after the local elections

Piali Das Gupta looks at the challenges of a change of political control for a council.

With much attention focused on the council areas where elections have been postponed, it seems to be overlooked that more than 100 councils are on track to hold elections this May.

For officers at many of these local authorities, it is an uncertain time. Some anticipate that a change of control could be on the horizon – potentially quite a radical change. But even where it is expected that the current administration will retain a majority, albeit possibly a slimmer one, there could be significant changes in the ranks of councillors, with substantial numbers of serving ones having opted to stand down or be deselected.
