Prevention and innovation: Securing adult social care's future

Chair of the LGA’s Health and Wellbeing Committee Cllr Dr Wendy Taylor MBE says the message from the latest adult social care data is both a warning and an opportunity: need and cost will continue to rise unless change accelerates.

More than a startling two million requests for adult social care were made to councils over the last year with nearly £25bn spent on this vital service by local authorities. This underlines the inherent value of adult social care to people across the country, yet councils simply do not have enough resource to meet this scale of need. 

 The latest Adult Social Care Finance and Activity data for 2024-25 confirms what councils have been reporting across the country: they are continuing to do their best to support the needs of people and their loved ones, all against a backdrop of inflationary pressures, workforce shortages, and increasing regulatory demands.
