Communities across England would gain £2bn a year and house 700,000 families, if all 300,000 long-term empty homes were brought back into use.
Communities minister, Andrew Stunell, made the claims in urging councils to bid for £100m DCLG funding to renovate disused properties and take up cash incentives offered through the new homes bonus.
