The number of disputes over the way government hands out public sector contracts soared by 84% as the spending squeeze strangled some firms' revenues, research suggests.

A study by commercial law firm EMW, published on 7 February, revealed a sharp increase in the number of complaints from businesses to Whitehall's Office for Government Commerce (OGC) in the 12 months to September 2010.
