Graduate public sector salaries are higher than the private sector for the first time, a management consultancy study has shown. The Hay Group revealed that a graduate going into the public sector could expect an average salary of £21,445 this year, 7% above the average private sector wage of £20,035. Civil service pay is only outpaced by the oil industry, where graduates can secure an average salary of £25,300. The rise has been associated with ‘increasing professionalism’ in the public sector.
