CBI chief, Sir Digby Jones, squared up to civil service union head, Mark Serwotka, in a robust debate at last week's PPMA conference in Brighton on whether Britain needed trade unions anymore. With the conference logo ‘create a little magic' as a backdrop, Sir Digby argued that unions represented the ‘deliverer' not the customer, and public sector pensions were no longer affordable. Mr Serwotka, general secretary of the Public and Commercial Services Union, said the average local government pension was £3,000.
