PM David Cameron is learning that ‘events, dear boy' have a habit of destabilising every government, especially new ones. Having had a charmed life in his first year, he is finding the second more problematic, not least over his public services reform policy, especially in health and criminal justice.
It was a bad decision to launch his Open public services White Paper on Monday in the middle of the News International media storm. It was very unhelpful of Southern Cross to go bust just as he was extolling the virtues of more private providers. He would have been advised to postpone the launch – again – unless, of course, he deliberately wanted to bury the White Paper which, judging by its content, is possible.
