Pulling councillors back on side on pensions

Communities secretary Steve Reed's announcement that councillors can re-enter the Local Government Pension Scheme is positive for all those interested in local democracy, says Heather Jameson.

Communities secretary Steve Reed's announcement that councillors will be allowed back into the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) will be welcomed by members – but it is good news for everyone interested in local democracy. 

The reality is that the pay and pensions system for councillors says far less about the role and more about the politics – and politicians – of the day.
