Unemployment, repossessions, rising benefits claims, tight town hall finances... it's enough to make you reach for a drink, isn't it? Well, it seems public sector workers are doing just that during the recession. A study for the Government's ‘Know your limits' campaign, which encourages people to drink responsibly, has found public sector workers are consuming an average of 26 units of alcohol – or 11 pints of beer – a week. That's at least five units above doctors' recommended intake. Almost 60% of drinkers say they have turned to alcohol to relieve stress after work, indicating the recession is heaping pressure on staff.
