Predictions of a recruitment crisis for councils as more staff retire have been dismissed by Local Government Employers. Responding to reports warning that councils will struggle to employ staff over the next decade, as one-third of current employees are due to retire, LGE managing director Jan Parkinson said: ‘The major reform of the reward package being led by LGE will strengthen the offer to new recruits and bring a fresh impetus to local government.' The changing nature of council work and private sector job losses, particularly in the City, will also boost public sector recruitment. Ms Parkinson said: ‘The popularity of local government careers for graduates is already increasing. The focus on making the lives of local people better is a great opportunity for ambitious young people.'
