Ken Livingstone has accused Redbridge LBC of refusing to build enough affordable homes. The London mayor's claim followed the authority's submission to the independent inspectorate stating if it was forced to set a new affordable homes target for the borough, it would be a lower target of 25%. But the mayor's London Plan has set a target of 50% of all new homes built to be affordable across the capital. Mr Livingstone said: ‘Redbridge council is clearly not interested in providing homes for local residents who cannot afford to buy at current market prices.' A Redbridge spokesman said the council was concerned the target could prejudice the supply of homes in the borough. ‘The GLA accepts the council's performance in the past few years in the actual delivery of affordable housing has compared favourably with other London boroughs,' he said. ‘If there is to be a minimum target in the core strategy, it should be realistic and capable of delivery on an ongoing basis. It is not just the percentage which is important, but also the actual numbers of homes provided.'
