The leader of York City Council will cut the number of high-earning officers at the authority as part of an efficiency drive. Speaking after Lib Dem leader, Nick Clegg, announced plans to cut high public sector salaries, Lib Dem leader, Andrew Waller, said the council would look to achieve a saving of 25% by reducing the number of staff on salaries of £100,000 and above. Cllr Waller revealed the move was one of a number of matters being examined by external consultants brought in to look at ways of achieving some £15m worth of savings at the council over the course of the next three years. The salary of York's incoming chief executive, Kersten England, who is currently Calderdale MBC's group director of community services, had been advertised at £145,000 – below the going rate for similar roles.
