Reed's policy brace as final whistle threatens to blow

The plans outlined this week by communities secretary Steve Reed to crack down on private sector firms profiteering from running children's homes are much needed, says Heather Jameson. 'If it does turn out to be Reed's final moment on the pitch, it is not a bad way to bow out.'

With the Makerfield by-election in full swing, months of speculation over the future of the Starmer Government may be drawing to a close – albeit at a glacial pace.

Predicting election outcomes is increasingly like trying to predict the outcome of a World Cup, based on the first round. You can try, but, until the final whistle blows, anyone can score.
