Government regional pay plans would affect up to 30% of the total workforce in parts of the country, the GMB trade union has reported.
According to figures released at the Trades Union Congress in Brighton, Wales would be hardest hit (30% of local employees) followed by Northern Ireland (28.8%) and the North East (28%). Brian Strutton, GMB national secretary for public services, said the result of regional pay deals would be local economies suffering a further drop in demand and thousands of private sector jobs being lost.
