Reorganisation could break care services unless government gets reform right

New analysis raises serious concerns for the future sustainability, quality and cost of people-based services if excessive fragmentation into smaller councils takes place, says Cllr Matthew Hicks.

If you ask any politician why they got into local government, it's a safe bet that their response will be that it was inspired by a desire to improve public services. No-one enters local government to disrupt – or even inadvertently worsen - frontline services. 

This motivation to genuinely improve local services was explicitly laid out by government when it announced the most ambitious reorganisation programme in almost two decades.
