Controversial plans by Wirral MBC to close some of its libraries are to be investigated by local government expert, Sue Charteris. Culture secretary, Andy Burnham, stepped in on 3 April to order a rethink on the closures. The closures have now been suspended, pending the inquiry's completion. Ms Charteris will investigate whether the council's plans are consistent with their statutory duties. Mr Burnham said: ‘We are in a time when local councils, like individuals, are economically challenged. ‘We also have a responsibility to ensure that local services are safeguarded from swingeing changes which could be potentially damaging to communities.'
