European procurement rules which already make it difficult for local authorities to save taxpayers' money are likely to become more complex and costly, council leaders warned this week.

The Local Government Association (LGA) voiced concerns that changes to European Union rules will make it ‘virtually impossible' for councils to use local suppliers and work with neighbouring authorities to procure services.
