Mark Hammond, West Sussex CC chief executive between 2004 and 2010, has been appointed head of the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

Earning a salary of £130,000 a year at the independent equalities body, the incoming chief executive has previously served as permanent secretary at the-then Department of the Environment, and was part of the UK team which negotiated at the UN climate change convention.
