Local Government has wide ranging powers & responsibilities around many aspects of our lives, including public health & it controls of many aspects of our daily lives. What then should local government do in the event of prolonged water shortages - in the East of England it looks set to be a problem for years to come. The water industry has failed to make the appropriate investment in water storage facilities & we are paying the price for a lack of stored water! As democratically led bodies what should local government now do? We have a legitimate place to play in the debate - should we be making alternative arrangements, encouraging or cajoling the water industry to take action now, or should we be addressing this through government?I am no state interventionist, but there does not appear to be enough of an incentive to make the proper investment in long term continuity of supply. An interesting debate to have with colleagues? Or is this something we ought just to leave to Mrs Spelman to sort out?
