Local Government Association (LGA) interim chief executive Jenny Rowlands will remain in the job until April 2028, the association has announced.Former Camden LBC boss Rowlands took on the role in April this year after previous chief Joanna Killian went on leave, and eventually stepped down in July, amid an organisational restructure.Rowlands was brought in to steady the ship, but has continued with a revised restructure which is due to be completed by Christmas and will be fully up and running by April 2027.The contract extension will give the chief a year to bed down the new structures before a permanent replacement is found.LGA Chair, Cllr Eamonn O'Brien, said: 'On behalf of the entire board, I'm delighted that Jenny will continue as our interim chief executive. She has brought a compassionate and thoughtful approach to leading the LGA, whilst at the same time harnessing a strong voice for local government on Rewiring the State and other critical issues facing the sector.'Jenny's continued leadership provides continuity and credibility through her strong track record and professional networks. It will enable us to build on our momentum and keep our focus firmly on supporting councils, championing local government and ultimately helping to improve outcomes for people and communities across the country.' Rowlands, said: 'We are working at pace with councils, strategic authorities and national government, using local government's experience and expertise to help deliver real improvements for the communities we all serve.'There is a huge amount of opportunity ahead, and I'm looking forward to continuing working alongside Eamonn as LGA chair, our group leaders and board, and colleagues and partners across the sector to seize it. Together, we can make sure local government is at the heart of shaping what comes next, and that the opportunities ahead translate into real change for local communities.'To deliver this, our staff need to feel valued and come to work able to be their best selves. We will continue to listen, learn and work together to move the organisation forward.'Rowlands left Camden last summer after eight years at the London borough. Since then she has worked as part of the transformation and assurance board at Tower Hamlets LBC, as well as assisting West Berkshire Council and Croydon LBC with their improvement plans.Speaking as she was appointed Rowlands, said: 'I am grateful for the opportunity to join the LGA at a pivotal moment in its own transformation and at a time when local government is playing an increasingly important role in shaping the future of place-based policy and public service reform.'Prior to Camden, Rowlands was chief executive of Lewes District Council and an executive director at Brighton and Hove City Council.
