There's no shortcut to success. It's a lesson Harborough DC's chairman Barbara Johnson has learned the hard way. Picture the scene: the councillor had entered a 5km charity run last month and – no doubt to her own amazement – the finish line was in sight and she was about to record a personal best. Sadly, Cllr Johnson – possibly due to the solar glare from her ceremonial chain – had inadvertently taken a shortcut around the course. But Cllr Johnson was a good sport and re-ran the course – minus the shortcut – this weekend. As her namesake Boris Johnson is trying to prove, there's no such thing as bad publicity and coverage of Cllr Johnson's mishap boosted the money she raised for an autism charity to a whopping £1,000. By simply completing the course she did better than many elite athletes at the World Athletic Championships in Doha on Saturday, when 28 of the 68 runners in the women's marathon failed to cross the finish line. All right, it was a bit hot, but maybe they should have found a shortcut.
