Torbay Council has become the first employer in the South West to be successfully prosecuted for breaking the laws for national minimum wages. The council was fined £1,000 with £500 costs by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) for ‘neglecting to supply information' to compliance officers on whether workers in the parks and leisure department had received the minimum wage. A spokesman for HMRC said: ‘This sentencing sends out a clear message to employers, large or small, that we will actively pursue those we suspect of flouting the National Minimum Wage Act.'
