A new guide to public scrutiny has been dedicated to the late Gwyneth Dunwoody MP. The Centre for Public Scrutiny (CfPS) has published Putting it into practice: The independent minded governor providing practical tips and good practice case studies. The guide has been dedicated to Mrs Dunwoody, who passed away recently. She was the longest-serving female MP and former chairwoman of the Transport Select Committee. CfPS executive director, Jessica Crowe, said: ‘Scrutineers tell us they can find it difficult to challenge colleagues on the council, the hospital trust board or the school governing body, particularly if they are from the same political party. ‘So, this publication seeks to highlight some practical means by which scrutineers can fulfill their role robustly and effectively, and how they can be supported to do so. ‘We felt it would be a fitting tribute to Mrs Dunwoody to dedicate the publication to her. ‘As she herself once said, "It is vital that committee members report what they find, rather than what may be politically palatable."'
