Sector jobs' sharp fall

Local government jobs are already showing a sharp drop, with public sector employment falling by 45,000 in the fourth quarter of last year, of which half was from local government.

Local government jobs are already showing a sharp drop, with public sector employment falling by 45,000 in the fourth quarter of last year, of which half was from local government.

Latest figures from the Office for National Statistics, out today, show that compared with the previous quarter, central government jobs dropped by 9,000, the civil service by 8,000, quangos by 12,000 and local government by 24,000.
