The public sector must share the burden of the recession, the Welsh Local Government Association has warned. Its annual conference in Swansea also questioned how Welsh councils would cope as budgets dried up and demand grew. Cllr John Davies, WLGA leader, said: ‘We are calling on all parties to engage in honest debate which acknowledges the scale of the task at hand.' A warning on reorganisation in Wales was also issued, with Cllr Davies saying it would be a ‘distraction' to do it now, ‘particularly at a time of recession.' He went on to outline what was stopping public services from working well in Wales, including unwieldy funding streams, stifling auditing procedures and the targets culture.
