Self help as library reopens

Local campaign group, Save Friern Barnet Library, will invite author Will Self to read from his Man Booker nominated novel Umbrella on 14 November.

The community activists reopened the library in September after it had been closed for six months, thwarting Barnet LBC's intention to sell the building and surrounding land. A report from the culture, media and sport select committee issued on 6 November warns some councils, which have changed their library provision, have done so without taking into consideration their statutory duty. John Whittingdale MP, who chairs the committee, said: ‘This is an expensive, undemocratic and generally-unsatisfactory way of making policy.'
