The executive chairman of Serco, one of Britain's largest local government contractors, is taking on a new role within the organisation next month. Kevin Beeston will become non-executive chairman of Serco in September. Said Mr Beeston: ‘The public sector is there to serve the public. That's what it's for. ‘But private sector companies are also there to serve the public. ‘And without satisfied citizens and satisfied customers, we won't achieve anything – an electoral mandate or new business.' Serco has more than 50,000 employees and an annual turnover of £2.5bn. The group is involved in a variety of sectors, including waste management, education and security services. In May this year, Ealing LBC and Serco signed a £30m 10-year partnership called Service Ealing. The London borough and Serco will jointly develop business cases for a wide range of initiatives. Southwark LBC awarded Serco a £26m five-year contract to upgrade its IT infrastructure in March. T and Transport for London.
