England's 46 fire authorities could save or reinvest £200m annually if spending was reduced to a national average, an efficiency review led by the country's top fireman has revealed.

Sir Ken Knight's independent Facing the Future report found the number of emergency call outs has drastically fallen by 40% in a decade and deaths by fire are at record lows, yet budgets and staffing levels have remained largely unaffected.
