Sevenoaks DC has been named the best local authority employer in the UK. The council beat off competition from another 18 other authorities to top the list, compiled following the ‘Best companies to work for' survey. Sevenoaks was closely followed by Suffolk CC and Wychavon DC, which share second place, while Hinckley and Bosworth BC (647), Rother DC (645) and Crawley BC which came fourth, fifth and six respectively. The top three councils were the only authorities to achieve a star rating, while the other 16 authorities were graded as ‘ones to watch' meaning ‘potentially great employers'. The Best Companies index score measures employee engagement by analysing questions answered by staff, based on a number of factors, including leadership, opportunities and corporate social responsibility. Robin Hales, chief executive at Sevenoaks, expressed his delight at the news. ‘This assessment is all about the council and its staff,' he said. ‘With the pressures on local government and the challenges we are facing, the partnership with our staff is vital to the successful delivery of our services to the community. ‘We will need to do even better in future, and this accreditation gives us some useful pointers in both public and private sectors.' Jack Hegarty, managing director of Wychavon, attributed his council's strong performance to the motivation and engagement of his workforce. ‘Even in these tough times we continue to involve people in the decisions we make. Our style is open and honest.'
