Housing charity Shelter has challenged East of England Regional Assembly over plans for new homes in the region. The charity believes the number of affordable homes built, rather than the total number of houses, should be the most important consideration. Shelter is calling on local people to respond to the consultation on the extension of the regional plan, which will decide the number of homes built in the region over the next 20 years. Shelter regional campaign officer, Chris Spencer, said: βAt the present time, the regional plan calls for 35% of all new homes to be affordable housing but, so far, it has fallen well short of that target.'
