Sir Gus hand-picks experienced boss to lead DWP reforms

Cabinet secretary, Sir Gus O'Donnell, has turned to an experienced hand to lead Whitehall's biggest-spending department – Work and Pensions (DWP) – as it seeks to slash its £135bn welfare costs and overhaul the benefits system.

Sir Gus has appointed Robert Devereux, current permanent secretary at the Department for Transport (DfT), to take on the same role at the DWP, once current Caxton House chief, Sir Leigh Lewis, retires in December.
