Slashing local government funding so that councils could not support an economic revival would be ‘a fatal error', the chair of the Local Government Association (LGA) has warned.

In his foreword to an eagerly-awaited report on local government funding, Sir Merrick Cockell urges ministers to consider where in the public sector the greatest burden of future cuts should fall.
