Great teams are built on trust, but it can easily break donw, says Martin Horton.

Ask anyone to list out the things that make for a great team, organisation, relationship, neighbour, partnership, and the word trust will invariably feature.

Picture someone you trust. Now, ask yourself, what it is about that person which led to you trusting them, and sustains that trust. Your list may include: they do what they say they will; honesty; they look after my interests; consistency; no hidden agenda; openness; they are there when I need them; they are predictable and I know where I stand with them. Trust brings with it goodwill, the benefit of the doubt, a sense of a freedom to act, knowing support will be there if things go wrong. Trust is essential to sustaining organisational and individual resilience through difficult times.
