Social workers in safeguarding warning

Home Office plans to overrule councils’ decisions on the age of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children present a ‘major safeguarding risk’, the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) has warned.

Home Office plans to overrule councils' decisions on the age of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children present a ‘major safeguarding risk', the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) has warned. 

Currently councils' decisions on age, under Section 51 of the National and Borders Act 2022, are final, even if the Home Office and its National Age Assessment Board (NAAB) has then assessed them as an adult.
