People love politicians. People love pop songs.Put the two of them together and it's a win-win, which cannot possibly fail. It was reported this week that the UK Independence Party has a new anthem, after former Radio 1 DJ Mike Read penned a catchy ditty entitled the UKIP Calypso. In the fine traditions of musical impartiality, the lyrics to the chorus are: ‘Oh yes, when we take charge/ And the new prime minister is Farage/ We can trade with the world again/ We can trade with the world again/ When Nigel is in Number 10.' Whether this song gets to Number 1 or suffers the same fate as Mr Read's Oscar Wilde musical, which shut after just one night, remains to be seen. Although it would be entertaining to find out what ‘80s chart-toppers Frankie Goes To Hollywood think of the song. Famously, Mr Read refused to play one of their singles – Relax – much to the group's chagrin. The single became one of the biggest sellers of the decade and still gets the party started today.
