Southampton City Council is the latest to go high-tech in their war on waste with a new ‘bin spy' data system. The system enables councils to track the movements of their refuse vehicles and for collectors to log the addresses of residents not recycling correctly, leaving extra bins out or failing to close bin lids. Up to 20 councils are already using this system and many of them have moved to a fortnightly rubbish collection arrangement. Southampton City Council said it will not punish residents for refuse misdemeanours but gather information on those struggling to recycle correctly or get their bin out on the right day and then ‘educate' them. The LGA said it should be ‘up to councils to decide what's best for people in their area'.
