An group of MPs has insisted that only high-speed rail links to Birmingham and Manchester could solve the shortage of capacity on the rail network.
Plans for the £33bn HS2 link have divided councils, but members of the all-party group for high-speed rail have published a report which claims incremental upgrades and other alternative schemes would be insufficient to cope with an increase in future demand and a shortfall in rail capacity.
