Whitehall and Westminster insiders have suggested the next Spending Review could effectively be curtailed to one year because of the timing of the general election.

The current four-year review ends on 31 March 2015, just weeks before the fixed date for the next national election when Conservatives and Liberal Democrats coalition allies will be fighting seats as separate parties.
