For years, an overly centralised policy focus and funding model from Whitehall has stymied the potential of northern communities, and stalled growth around the country. But the Devolution White Paper could be a game-changer. A real say for mayors over housing, regeneration, decarbonisation, skills, transport - and more - represents real progress.
For the North, this really matters. We see pockets of deprivation sitting alongside areas of wealth, post-industrial towns, large urban areas, coastal communities and rural areas, all with very different needs. A 'one-size fits all' approach doesn't work. We need a place-based approach - and the North is leading the way with mayors either established or on the way across almost all areas.
