From spreadsheets to services: How Fair Funding is starting to reach communities

Having worked hard to secure the Fair Funding Settlement, the responsibility now is to show clearly how it will be used on the ground, says Sally Jameson.

When governments announce large funding packages, the numbers are often bold, but the day‑to‑day impact can be blurred. Millions are pledged, percentages debated, yet for many people it is still unclear what any of this means for their everyday lives.

The Fair Funding Settlement announced in December represented a genuinely transformative step forward for local government finance. Following sustained engagement from SIGOMA councils and parliamentarians, the Government committed to two connected reforms: a move toward deprivation‑based funding with 100% council tax equalisation, and a strengthened Recovery Grant targeted at authorities facing the greatest pressures. Together, these changes ensure councils' resources better reflect underlying need while properly recognising differences in local revenue‑raising capacity.
