Making a start on SEND costs

With social care funding still unresolved, the Budget at least took a decisive first step toward tackling the spiralling costs of SEND, writes Michael Burton.

Last week's Budget announced that from 2028-29 SEND costs will be picked up by government rather than local authorities, effectively nationalising special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) costs, is an interesting development, considering the similar challenge of social care costs.

Typically, there was no detail as to how that bill will be met other than there being an announcement in the New Year, but at least the Treasury recognises that SEND is threatening to tip many councils into bankruptcy.
