Government plans to give councils more powers to curb binge drinking must be ‘straightforward and cost-effective', town hall leaders have warned. Deputy chair of the Local Government Association, Cllr Richard Kemp, said the Government must recognise the role of the police in acting against premises selling alcohol illegally. He said: ‘There is still a lot more town halls could do to make our streets nicer places to be during popular drinking times. ‘There are questions to be asked about how these restrictions will work, and it will be important to ensure the process is as straightforward and cost-effective as it can be.'
