Strap in now for a bumpy London elections ride

London’s traditional town hall politics is set for a shake-up in May. As it braces for its most consequential local elections jolt in a generation, Nick Bowes ponders who stands to gain most from Labour’s woes.

The Conservatives and Labour have dominated London's 32 town halls ever since the current boroughs were created back in 1964.

Only once in 16 elections have Labour and the Conservatives not bagged 80% or more of all councillors elected in the capital. After 2022's elections, 1,560 of the 1,817 councillors (86%) in Greater London were Labour or Tory.
