Making our high streets great again: The French ingredient

French planning lessons could help councils revive traditional shops and regenerate struggling high streets, argues finance cabinet member at Merton LBC Stephen Alambritis.

The Prime Minister is on record as promising to give councils extra powers to curb unwanted retailers to boost British high streets. There is also a push from business representative bodies for reform to the business rate system. Both are laudable aims.

But before Andy Burnham, the Federation of Small Businesses and the Confederation of British Industry go any further on their  solutions, they need look at France's busy boulevards and main streets.
