~Fife Council~ has offered help and advice to more than 2,000 homes in the Cellardyke and Anstruther region, following the first confirmed case of bird flu in Britain last week. Tests revealed a dead swan, found in Cellardyke harbour on 30 March, had the deadly H5N1 avian flu virus. Previous European cases have been confined to countries such as Germany (pictured). Fife's chief executive, ~Douglas Sinclair~ said: ‘Although ~Fife Council~'s role is one of supporting the Scottish Executive and the other national agencies in managing this incident, we know local people have concerns about avian influenza or "bird flu", and we want to do all we can to reassure them.' All Scottish councils have contingency plans in place to deal with an outbreak within their area.
