Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland councils have been jointly awarded £73.5m to develop a waste treatment plant, which will stop thousands of tonnes of waste going into landfill. The councils aim to double recycling rates to 50% by 2020 and find treatment solutions to deal with the rubbish leftover.
