Confidence in the ability of councils and the police to deal with crime issues which matter to residents is on the increase, with the latest annual figures showing a rise from 57% to 62%.
The rise is revealed in the Crime Survey for England and Wales, published by the Office for National Statistics on 19 July, which showed that just under four million crimes were recorded by the police in 2011/12. Continuing the downward trend of recent years, the figures represent a 4% drop from the previous year and mark the lowest annual total since 2002/03.
