Women have smashed through the glass ceiling in 22 English councils, according to a new survey by the GMB. The survey found more than half the top 5% earners in 22 English councils and one Scottish authority – Stirling Council – are women. Thurrock Council came top, where 58.6% of its top 5% earners are female. ‘Women in local government have started to break through the glass ceiling into the top jobs,' said GMB national equality and diversity officer, Kamaljeet Jandu. ‘It is no accident that this has happened where trade union organisation is strong, and fights for equal opportunities.' The GMB's top five: Thurrock Council 58.6% Lewisham LBC 56.3% Rochdale MBC 56.1% Essex CC 55% Redcar and Cleveland Councils 55%
